AI Usage Reached 76B Sessions a Month Worldwide, Growing 37% YoY (Sep 2025 vs Sep 2026)
In the US, it reached 6.6B sessions, up 45% year-over-year (YoY). Growth has slowed sharply. The year to September 2025 ran at 396% worldwide and 332% in the US. On a rolling three-month basis, comparing the last three months vs. the previous three months, on a day-normalized basis, the market is now adding 7% worldwide and 7.5% in the US.
Total LLM Sessions (Web+App)
Claude Grew Fastest, but ChatGPT Still Absorbed More Than Half the Growth
Year-over-year growth worldwide, fastest first: Claude +1901%, Gemini +182%, Grok +123%. In the US: Claude +862%, Gemini +151%, Grok +75%. For sessions added in the last 12 months, the order inverts: ChatGPT contributed 58.9% of total worldwide growth, Claude 26%, and Gemini 12%. In the US, AI growth contributions are ChatGPT 60%, Claude 26%, and Gemini 11%. Interestingly, Perplexity saw significant worldwide YoY contraction, dropping 27% (Sep 2025 vs Sep 2026).

2023: The Fastest Growing Consumer App in History
When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it caused dramatic changes in the landscape of AI, search, and marketing. After only 2 months, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer app in history. As of October 2025, ChatGPT sees over 800 million weekly active users (source: tech.eu) and 2.5 billion daily prompts worldwide (source: Axios).
Note: Threads reportedly grew to 100 million users in only 5 days; however, Threads is an app that was built on Instagram rather than being a net new technology product.

The Messy & Unpredictable Growth of AI
Forecasts for new technologies often predict a conservative linear growth curve or a more ambitious exponential hockey stick growth curve. Most forecasts of AI favor the more ambitious hockey stick.
AI grew exponentially between July 2023 and June 2025, plateaued from July to December 2025, and has grown steadily since January 2026. However, on a micro level, no one LLM has followed the forecasted clean, predictable growth curves. The reality is instead a series of unpredictable events, bursts, and ups and downs.
AI Sessions by Product (Worldwide)
ChatGPT is experiencing fierce competition in the AI race. Competing LLM companies have collectively raised nearly $200B. Claude has seen explosive growth starting in February 2026. Gemini has more than doubled its share of the market over the last 12 months and is now the third-largest LLM behind ChatGPT and Claude.
LLM Market Share Worldwide (Excluding ChatGPT Line)
However, no competitor has reached even a 10% market share, and ChatGPT still maintains an 81.2% share of the market worldwide and 80.7% in the US in September 2026.

- After growing 15x between January 2024 and July 2025, ChatGPT's sessions plateaued starting in July 2025 through June 2026.
- However, starting in July 2026, ChatGPT’s growth has returned and September 2026 is +24% YoY worldwide. The same month OpenAI reported 1.2B weekly users.
- Further, its market share has not only maintained but has increased recently.
ChatGPT Sessions (Worldwide)
Something Big Is Happening with Claude
- Starting in February 2026, Claude has seen one of the largest growth trajectories among LLMs.
- US sessions are up +252%, between January and March 2026, from 90M to 317M.
- Daily active users (DAU) grew by 345%, and app installs by 1192%, comparing the end of March 2026 to the beginning of January 2026.
- Worldwide, the numbers are even larger. Sessions increased 296%, from 459M to 1.82B, DAU by 443%, and app installs by 1495%.
- Claude's growth is not a temporary spike caused solely by controversy in the United States. Rather, the surge appears to be driven by a combination of three catalysts: the launch of Claude Cowork, the release of Opus and Sonnet 4.6, and a widely publicized standoff with the Pentagon, which introduced Claude to a much larger audience.

Gemini’s Slow Start, Rapid Rise & Plateau
- After a slow start following its launch, Gemini has seen one of the most sustained, rapid growth trajectories among LLMs since August 2025.
- US sessions are up +33% and DAU by 70%, while app installs fell by 46%, comparing the end of May 2026 to the beginning of January 2026.
- Worldwide, the numbers mirror this scale. Sessions grew by 45% from January to May 2026 (and saw a massive 49% MoM spike earlier in September 2025), with DAU growing by 76% while app installs fell by 29%.
- Since May 2026, worldwide sessions have slipped 2.8% over four months.
- Gemini's growth is not a temporary spike caused by a single viral moment. Rather, the surge appears to be driven by a series of product launches that improved the Gemini experience.
- Gemini 2.5 Flash Image (Nano Banana)
- Gemini 3 Pro

AI Mode Is Now Bigger Than Gemini in the US
In March 2025, Google launched Google AI Mode, which is a chat experience powered by Gemini and embedded within the Google search experience. In May 2026, Google announced that AI Mode received over 1B monthly users. Google also said that it would combine “AI Overviews and AI Mode into one, seamless AI Search experience.”
Google AI Mode received 491M web visits in the US in August 2026, compared with 360M for Gemini, meaning 36% more.

DeepSeek's Sudden Burst & Extended Plateau
- US sessions are up +10,247%, comparing February 2025 to December 2024, and the app was averaging 410K DAU by the last week of February 2025, after reaching a peak of nearly 800K DAU on January 28.
- Worldwide, the numbers are staggering. Sessions grew by 15,346%, and the app went from zero to 14M DAU and 701K daily installs by the end of February, with a launch-week peak of 35M DAU and 1.7M installs in a single day on February 11.
- DeepSeek's growth curve is not a standard linear progression. Rather, the surge appears to be driven by
- The open-weight release of DeepSeek-V3
- DeepSeek-R1 reasoning model
Together, these milestones fueled massive global adoption, despite significant geopolitical scrutiny and bans.
DeepSeek Sessions (Worldwide)
Grok's Rapid Rise & Pullback
- US sessions are up +412%, DAU by 1,232%, and app installs by 2,081%, comparing the end of May 2025 to the beginning of February 2025. The Android app launched in that window, so part of the DAU jump reflects that launch.
- Worldwide, the numbers are even larger. Sessions grew by 701%, DAU by 4,865%, and app installs by 3,570% over that same period.
- Since peaking at 1.82B in March 2026, worldwide sessions have fallen 24% to 1.38B in September 2026.
- Grok's growth is not a steady, slow-building climb. Rather, the surge appears to be driven by a combination of three major milestones.
- The scaling power of the Colossus supercomputer with Grok 3
- Free access to Grok 3 for all users (February 2025)
- Grok 4
Grok Sessions (Worldwide)
Perplexity's Rise & Fall
- US sessions fell by 30%, DAU by 27%, and app installs by 91%, comparing the end of September 2026 to the peak in October 2025.
- Worldwide, the numbers reflect this contraction. After growing over 550% from September 2024 to its October 2025 peak, sessions have plummeted by 38%, with DAU falling by 33% and app installs by 93%.
- Perplexity's peak and subsequent drop are not due to natural market saturation. Instead, the crash appears driven by a series of negative events.
- The mass copyright infringement lawsuits led by The New York Times
- A pivot away from an ad-revenue sharing model
- The deployment of new native OS search integrations squeezed the platform's audience significantly.
Perplexity Sessions (Worldwide)
The growth of Claude, Gemini, and other LLMs is an expansion of the AI market, and not a shift away from ChatGPT to others. Every major LLM but Perplexity grew in total sessions comparing Sep 2025 to Sep 2026, including ChatGPT, which increased by 24%.

The AI Attribution Gap
Referral traffic from AI is a small channel relative to others. Our data suggest that AI accounts for less than 1% of traffic on average to websites.
Relative Traffic Volume by Channel (US, Q2 2026)
However, referral traffic does not tell the full story of the impact from AI.
It is common for AI answers to have little to nothing to click on, even when products and brands are recommended. Anecdotally, many users who see a brand or product in AI will open a new tab and navigate directly to or search for the brand in search engines, then visit the website. This traffic is then misattributed to direct or branded search, respectively.
Our June 2026 case study with n8n evaluated the attribution gap between conversions from AI referral traffic and self-reported conversions. We found that conversions from AI referral visits accounted for only 10% of conversions.
We do not have sufficient data to draw broader market conclusions, but this one case study suggests that referral traffic from AI undercounts its total impact.
AI Growth by Region
The United States is home to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and Perplexity. With the exception of DeepSeek, every major LLM company started in the United States. Despite this, only 8.8% of total AI usage is based in the US.
US Market Share (Sep 2026)
Unlike AI's non-linear worldwide growth, AI in the US has shown more consistent linear growth, with 45% YoY growth in September 2026.

Public Disclosures vs. Similarweb Data
- ChatGPT reported 900M+ weekly active users by the end of March 2026, and Similarweb reports an estimate of 476M weekly active users (WAU). The 900M figure is attainable if you consider users without de-duplication.
- Users logging in from multiple surfaces and devices are likely the reason for this difference.
- In Aug 2026, Google publicly announced that “Gemini app has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly users”. Data from Similarweb from that same period indicates that there are 648M monthly active users across surfaces without de-duplication.

Comparison with Prior Research
This study builds on a similar study we published in March 2026, “AI Is Much Bigger Than You Think.” This study was one of the first to show the growth in AI usage on mobile apps. This study is mostly consistent with the previous study, yet we call out several differences.
Shortcomings in our prior research are worth noting:
AI vs. Search
- Our original study compared the size of search-related AI with search engines.
- The previous study included web visits for the top 6 search engines and both web and mobile app sessions for the top 5 LLMs.
- We did not include mobile app sessions for search engines. Most search engines receive little usage of their respective mobile apps.
- However, Google's Android app is heavily used, with an estimated 11.8B monthly sessions in the US.
- The Google Android app is used for a variety of non-search-related applications such as image recognition, translation, and Google Discover, as well as traditional Google search. We have no reliable data source for how many sessions are focused on search or not. For this reason, we can no longer reliably compare the relative size of AI for search vs. search engines.
- Our previous study likely undercounted Google search usage from Google's Android mobile app and, therefore, search-related AI usage relative to search engines.
AI Visibility & Branded Search
- Many AI answers that suggest products or brands do not have a strong call to click. Oftentimes, when users see a product, they search for the brand in a search engine and visit the brand site.
- This can inflate the number of branded searches in search engines.
- Early analysis suggests that traffic from search engines via branded search queries is relatively flat YoY indicating that AI growth has not produced a net increase in branded search traffic. We will share the full analysis in an upcoming study.
- However, at a micro level, we have evidence suggesting that some search engine traffic is caused by AI visibility. As we showed in our study with n8n, 90% of conversions from AI were not accounted for via last-touch attribution.
- We do not have reliable data or studies evaluating how much of search engine usage is caused by AI visibility. However, we acknowledge that the usage of search engines may be overcounted as a result of this.
Data & Methodology
Definition of Metrics
Visits — A “visit” to a website is counted when a visitor accesses one or more pages during a session. Subsequent pageviews are included in the same visit until the user is inactive for more than 30 minutes. If a user becomes active again after 30 minutes, that counts as a new visit. A new session will also start at midnight.
Session (Apps) — A session is a period of time when a user interacts with an app. Session metrics are a primary measure of user engagement, as they capture how frequently and how long users interact with an app.
Web Visits vs. App Sessions — Web “visits” are session counts with a 30-minute inactivity rule aggregated monthly, while app “sessions” reflect real app usage periods and are typically measured and analyzed on a daily engagement basis.
Monthly Visits (Web) measure how many times users visit a website. A “visit” (or web session) begins when someone loads a page and ends after 30 minutes of inactivity or at midnight. The metric simply sums all of these sessions over the course of a month.
App Sessions measure how often users actively use a mobile app. A session represents a period of interaction while the app is open and in use. Instead of a fixed 30-minute timeout rule in the documentation, app sessions are based on actual app engagement and are typically reported as sessions per user per day, along with average and total session time.
Gen AI Referral Traffic — A website visit that originated from a Gen AI product including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and others.
Desktop Apps
Since our previous study, both the Claude and OpenAI desktop apps have grown significantly. We do not have a reliable data source for desktop apps. Therefore, the size of AI usage and the % of AI that is used on desktop vs. mobile will both be undercounted.
Appendix
Desktop web share of AI sessions, September 2025 to September 2026, YoY
Worldwide
United States
Desktop sessions grew 43% worldwide, versus mobile's 36%, increasing desktop share from 10.1% to 10.6% worldwide and from 22.4% to 23.2% in the US. This may signal a return to desktop. However, if we remove Claude and Gemini, two of the fastest-growing and most web-oriented assistants, the growth disappears; worldwide desktop share falls from 8.9% to 7.7%, a decline. The same pattern holds for ChatGPT, which fell from 8.5% to 7.5%.
